In the old days, leather armour was a very common type of armour, especially among the lower class people and the common soldier or scout - mainly because it didn't make as much noise as the metal armour did and was easy to make and weighed a lot less!
This type of armour was made from a leather hide off an animal such as a cow or bull. The hide was then prepared and the leather armour pattern made and cut out. Depending on what sort of leather armour a person wanted, it could be left soft or it could be hardened by boiling it in oil.
